Ambient Weather WS-1001-WIFI Review

One of the biggest challenges with most home weather stations is that they fail to suit the environment, like mounting them could create a big mess and neighbors will be yelling at you if you disturb them while mounting your weather station. This is, however, not the case with Observer. When this weather station is set up correctly, it provides pretty accurate information which you can rely on.

Ambient has priced this WS-1001 model at an medium range. It's affordable for both home and office purpose. 

One of the most unique transmission feature that other weather stations don't have is, It transmits the weather data from the outdoor unit to display console using WIFI technology. However, Internet connectivity is not required.

The Outdoor unit aka the Observer transmits various weather conditions such as temperature, humidity, rainfall data, wind speed and direction, barometric pressure. 

The device updates the weather conditions every 14 seconds, which is kinda slow. However, It is not a big deal for some people.

Installation & Sensor Array

Ambient WS 1001 Observer is more advanced, more accurate and thus more expensive than the most other weather stations. However, Quality doesn’t come for cheap right? 😉 

The weather station packs all the accessories required for the set up of the sensor array including mounting hardware, retractable tripod, and batteries. The sensor array features an integrated solar panel which recharges the batteries. The sensor array doesn’t come packed as a single unit and hence it needs to be first assembled. Once sensor array components are put together, the unit is attached to the tripod.

It can record the follow weather data,

  • Indoor and Outdoor Temperature & Humidity
  • Barometric Pressure
  • Wind Speed & Direction
  • Rainfall Data

The WS-1001 kit also includes indoor pressure and temperature sensor. The console features a TFT colored LCD screen which displays all the weather data the sensor array transmits. Setting up the console is relatively easier than installing the sensor array.


The indoor and outdoor sensors and the base station need to be connected wirelessly using Wi-Fi. Setting up the connection could get a little tricky as the obstructions may affect the quality of the reception. If there is clear line of sight you can keep base station and sensor array up to 300 feet apart.

If there are obstacles in the path of the transmission, the distance between the two should not be more than 100 feet for all intents and purposes. However, You can use WiFi extender to increase the range.

Accuracy and Display

Once you have set up the station correctly, you will have access to a wide range of weather data. The LCD screen displays data related to temperature, heat index, humidity, rainfall, atmospheric pressure, sunset, sunrise, moon phases, UV index and more.

This makes WS-1001 more than just a home weather station which provides enough weather data for both weather geeks and normal people. For most people, it is more information than they might need.

Additional Features

If you wish to maintain the personal record of the data, you can export the display readings in spreadsheet format to an SD card. Observer also shows the data in the form of the graph in case you like that. You can set the alarms to warn you of the weather conditions going unfavorable.

Purpose and Price

Observer has been categorized as the home-weather station and is usually bought by the weather hobbyists. However, it is more involved than the other stations in the same category and hence can also be used for the semi-professional purposes.

Ambient has priced it in a medium range. That’s probably the price you have to pay for a superior quality weather station.

Connecting to Weather Underground (An online portal enables you to explore more features) is the lovely feature you could get, However you need reliable Internet to integrate your weather station with Weather Underground.
